Mangano Calcite's Properties

This stone has a chemical formula of CaCO3. It's overall hardness if relatively soft (scoring about a 3 out of 10 for hardness). Since it is a soft and gentle stone, it is a good choice for soothing anxiety, healing tension, and nurturing your mental, emotional, and physical health, etc.

Minerology

Calcite is the most common form of CaCO3 that can be found in the Earth's crust. Specifically, Mangano Calcite is located in various geological environments around the globe. These include chalk, sediments, and even seashells. Typically, calcite forms as large masses of marble and limestone, however, it may also form as the beautiful pink crystal or as a wide range of other colors and types of crystals.

Optical calcite is an example of double refraction in a crystal. Double refraction means that when light shines through the crystal, half of it passes through, and the other half is bent. This results in the appearance of two images of an object or text when the human eye gazes at the calcite. A unique feature of calcite is that it will shine pink under a long wave ultraviolet light, and blue under a short wave.

Calcite is easily recognizable because of the stone's overall softness and reactivity with mild acids. For example, it creates a distinctive "fizz" when it reacts with vinegar.

History/Tradition

In 79 AD, Gaius Plinius Secundus first named the stone calcite and identified it as a mineral. The ancient peoples used calcite (in its marble form), for building structures, statues, etc. In fact, the Ancient Egyptians used alabaster (or yellow calcite) for their carvings. Another type of calcite, limestone, was used by the Macedonians and the Romans.

Calcite has a rich history and tradition of architecture, carvings, and even in mythology. Up until the present, the significance of Mangano Calcite has become important as a symbol for healing, forgiveness, relieving tension, stress, and anxiety, and promoting a gentle energy.
